Your eyes trick you

SUMMARY

Perception

      • Our eyes are much more sensitive to dark values than bright ones

      • This difference of perception depending on the amount of light can be called non-linear. All light is not always treated the same by our eyes/brain

      • Keep in mind that you are biased, and need to be careful when working with color. Darken bright images to make sure to properly see all the detail that can be present

Function

      • Eyes and digital mediums (screens, images...) function fundamentally different, we need a different colorspace for them to appear properly to us

      • The most 'basic' function of a colorspace transformation is to transform an image from a linear progression to a non-linear one

      • This kind of colorspace transformation aims to 'compress' light differently between dark and bright values, to match our own non-linear perception of light, making them look good for us
